Situated in the rolling hills of Devon in the quaint and historic town of Totnes, Quayside Extra Care is a flagship scheme for dementia-friendly facilities. The impressive development by the Guinness Partnership emphasises comfort, safety and enjoyment for their residents which is certainly reflected by its many communal facilities. The development, on top of the 60 high-quality Extra Care apartments, contains a bistro, a modern café, a landscaped garden, an activity area and a ‘pamper suite’.

On top of the ‘outstanding’ standard of care, as rated by CQC inspections, Quayside places high importance on affordable, energy-efficient and reliable heating and hot water supplies. This is ensured by energy metering which guarantees fair billing as well as rapid diagnosis of any malfunction affecting energy efficiency. The high standard of every aspect of Quayside is apparent, not only to its residents but also to outside organisations as highlighted by its two awards:

  • LABC South West Regional Award for Best Large Commercial Building 2018
  • Devon Building Control Building Excellence Awards 2018 for Best Specialist Residential.

The Team behind the awards:

  • M & E Consultancy by Services Design Solutions, Plymouth
  • Heat Network Consultancy by Fairheat, London.
  • HIU sizing and provision by SAV, Woking
  • Main Contactor: Galliford Try Partnership, Exeter
  • M & E Contractor, Whitehead Building Services, Exeter

How the Award in the West was Won

As a care home, Quayside relies on its heating system to be fully functioning and reliable. Danfoss units ensure this. Being the frontrunner of heat interface unit technologies since its inception, Danfoss units could not have been a better choice. Their HIUs are known to last for two decades and their self-acting mechanical valves remain a key differentiator. With the use of Danfoss HIUs, the Quayside heat network provides ‘peace of mind’ for residents and employees alike.

On top of the Danfoss HIU’s many benefits, upon installation, the Quayside MEP systems (Mechanical, Electrical and Public Health) were commended for their reliability and ease of maintenance. Additionally, the thermal efficiency of the site ensures that energy costs have been kept under a tight rein. As a Galliford Try manager put it,

“…energy costs have never been so low, even during the Beast from the East”.

All these features mean that Quayside Extra Care Totnes benefits from its well-designed and excellently managed heat network. As a development that underlines comfort and enjoyment for its residents, it was essential that the heating system complimented this. Today it can be confidently said, that this has been achieved.
