CPD – Minimising School Capital Plant with MVHR

Minimising School Capital Plant with MVHR

This CPD explores the relationship between ventilation strategy and the size and cost of the heating plant in schools. Traditionally, building services have treated ventilation and heating as separate systems. However, when designing low carbon buildings, particularly with heat pumps, these systems become highly interdependent.

The focus of this presentation is to demonstrate how Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR) can significantly reduce heating demand in classrooms. This reduction in demand lowers peak heating loads and allows the capital plant, including heat pumps, electrical infrastructure, and plant space, to be smaller.

The CPD will therefore examine how ventilation design can directly influence capital plant sizing, operational energy use, and lifecycle cost in school buildings.

What issues does the CPD cover?

  • Understanding the relationship between ventilation strategies and heating plant sizing in school buildings
  • Recognising how MVHR reduces space heating demand in classrooms
  • Identify how reduced heating loads can enable smaller, more efficient heat pump systems and associated infrastructure
  • Evaluate the impact of ventilation design on capital costs, plant space requirements and electrical capacity
  • Apply best practise approaches to designing low carbon school buildings using coordinated ventilation and heating strategies

What is the format of the CPD Seminar?

SAV seminars are informal, and questions are welcomed at any stage from attendees.

They are often held during lunchtime and have a maximum duration of 1.5 hours. Supplementary material will be made available to consolidate knowledge.

We prefer to host CPD seminars in person because we think that face-to-face interaction leads to better results.
