AirMaster

Achieving Net Zero Classrooms with Minimum Energy Waste

To achieve Net Zero in schools, we need to minimise heat loss, reducing heat plant and fossil fuel consumption. AirMasters can recover up to 90% of the classrooms heat and have a low specific fan power, making them the ideal holistic choice for Net Zero classrooms.

The Benefits of Decentralised MVHR

The first step on the road to Net Zero is to achieve energy savings.
In the UK, a substantial quantity of these energy savings will be realised by reducing heat loss in existing buildings. Consequently, our building fabric needs to be improved.

However, a classroom’s ventilation demand is significant. The air within these rooms contains a great deal of heat, which we need to conserve if we are to achieve our Net Zero goals.

Using mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR), we can supply air to the room at an appropriate temperature, whilst maintaining good indoor air quality. AirMaster achieves this with a high heat recovery efficiency and low specific fan power.

AirMaster is a Danish product, which was created approximately 30 years ago. Therefore, we benefit from decades of Danish experience
in the mitigation of heat loss, with minimal energy waste

AirMaster SMVs

AirMaster Smart Mechanical Ventilation units (SMVs) are decentralised MVHR. They consume a very small amount of energy due heat exchangers, but also have a very low specific fan power (SFP). This is made possible because they use the Coanda Effect to distribute air in the room. Using the Coanda Effect also means that no distribution ductwork is required.

AirMasters are typically fitted with integrated CO2 sensors, enabling demand-controlled ventilation. This benefits both indoor air quality and energy usage: when occupancy is high, the ventilation rate increases, improving the indoor air quality; when occupancy is low, the ventilation rate decreases, reducing energy consumption.

By using heat recovery, the Coanda effect, and having low specific fan powers, AirMasters achieve much lower energy performance than centralised and hybrid mixer boxers, making them an optimal choice for Net Zero school design.

AirMaster for Educators

Increasing CO₂ concentrations have a major impact on both the indoor and outdoor environment. To reduce carbon emissions, buildings have been made more air-tight, reducing heat loss and making them more energy efficient. But this is a double-edged sword; with inadequate ventilation, an air-tight room will suffer from poor air quality and a high CO₂ concentration.

AirMaster for Passivhaus

In July 2021 the AirMaster AM 1000 was awarded Passivhaus Component certification under the category of “Decentralised ventilation system (school room).” This makes it possible to use the AM 1000 in Passivhaus school classrooms, as well as other Passivhaus certified buildings.

For Passivhaus schools, the AirMaster AM 1000 is a low-SFP alternative to centralised systems.
